Propensity Score Estimates of the Effect of Fertility on Marital Dissolution
نویسنده
چکیده
In recent years many studies have reported significant empirical associations between fertility and marital dissolution. Whether this is a causal effect or only a correlation is not clear. We explore this issue by using the propensity score methods. First we explore the effect of the binary treatment ”having young children or not” on marital disruption. Then, we extend the method to the case of the multi-valued treatment “number of young children in the household”. The main findings indicate that both having young children and having an additional child reduce the probability of marital dissolution. This negative effect is found robust to the different estimation methods used.

An Application of Non-response Bias Reduction Using Propensity Score Methods
In many statistical studies some units do not respond to a number or all of the questions. This situation causes a problem called non-response. Bias and variance inflation are two important consequences of non-response in surveys. Although increasing the sample size can prevented variance inflation, but cannot necessary adjust for the non-response bias. Therefore a number of methods ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Inflation Targeting on Indirect Tax Performance in Selected Countries Using Propensity Score Matching Model
Inflation targeting framework has become a predominant monetary approach across the globe. Williams (2015) believes that in a very real sense, almost all economies are inflation targeters -either explicit or implicit- now.(1) Due to the increasing spread of this policy, it is necessary to consider the way it affects macroeconomic variables. using prevalent economic models for evaluating the eff...
متن کاملMarital Dissolution and Major Depression in Midlife: A Propensity Score Analysis.
Marital dissolution is commonly assumed to cause increased depression among adults, but causality can be questioned based on directionality and third variable concerns. The present study improves upon past research by using a propensity score matching algorithm to identify a sub-sample of continuously married participants equivalent in divorce risk to participants who actually experienced separ...

Background and Aim: Case-Control studies provide evidence in the area of health. Validity and accuracy of such studies depend to a large extent on the similarity (similar distributions) of the case and control groups according to confounding variables. Matching is a method for controlling or eliminating the effects of important confounders. Matching using propensity score has recently been intr...
متن کاملThe risk of divorce as a barrier to marriage among parents of young children.
Using data from the Fragile Families Study, we examine how unmarried parents' risk of divorce influences their decision to marry. Regression results show that unmarried parents with a high predicted probability of marital dissolution (based on estimates of marital dissolution for a sample of initially married mothers with similar characteristics) had significantly lower odds of marriage to the ...
